But an immediate outcome of the change of flag in the South was the appearance of "The Bonnie Blue Flag," with its spirited refrain:
" We are a band of brothers, and native to the soil, Fighting for our Liberty, with treasure, blood, and
toil; And when our rights were threatened, the cry rose
near and far Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single
star. Hurrah ! Hurrah ! For Southern rights Hurrah ! Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag, that bears a single
Star."
But a song was coming that was to become far more typical than this pretty, but not very characteristic, melody; and the new song of the South had already become popular in the North, where it had its birth.
